Hoka and Salomon form the leading duo in the second edition of the International Trail Team Rankings.
The International Trail Running Team Rankings are organized into three hierarchical pyramid divisions: World Trail Team (6 teams), Continental Trail Team (8 teams) and Challenger Trail Team (10 teams). See details below.
This ranking will now be updated every four months (January-April / May-August / September-December). See details below.
At the very top of this collective performance pyramid (World Trail Team), Hoka and Salomon are ahead of:
👉 Asics, Adidas Terrex, ACG Nike and Kailas Fuga, when the ranking is based on ITRA performance scores.
👉 ACG Nike, On, Adidas Terrex and Asics, when the ranking is based on the UTMB Index.
🔹 According to the ITRA benchmark, On and Dynafit dominate the lower divisions, namely Continental Trail Team and Challenger Trail Team, respectively.
🔹 According to the UTMB benchmark, Brooks and La Sportiva dominate the lower divisions, namely Continental Trail Team and Challenger Trail Team, respectively.

Key takeaways
1. Five major global brands
Regardless of the indicator used, five brands currently dominate the global trail running landscape:
- Hoka
- Salomon
- Asics
- Adidas Terrex
- ACG Nike
Kailas or On, depending on whether the ITRA or UTMB benchmark is used, complete the top 6 that make up the World category.
The gap to the second category (Continental) remains relatively small (only 15 to 25 points out of 1,000), but these teams all share one common characteristic: they are capable of fielding eight elite-level athletes, men and women combined.
The rankings show that roster depth is now becoming almost as important as having a superstar.
2. Hoka and Salomon remain untouchable
Hoka remains No. 1 in both rankings (ITRA and UTMB).
Salomon retains second place, virtually tied with the leader.
Their strength lies notably in the balance between their men’s and women’s squads.
At Hoka, Jim Walmsley, Francesco Puppi, Anne Flower and Judith Wyder are extremely difficult to match.
At Salomon, the combination of Courtney Dauwalter, Tove Alexandersson and Rémi Bonnet is formidable.
No other team currently has as many athletes capable of exceeding 940 points out of 1,000.
3. UTMB and ITRA are diverging
Last December, the two systems produced virtually the same team ranking.
Today:
- On is a World Team according to the UTMB Index but a Continental Team according to the ITRA Performance Index.
- Kailas is a World Team according to the ITRA Performance Index but a Continental Team according to the UTMB Index.
- La Sportiva is a Continental Team according to the ITRA Performance Index but a Challenger Team according to the UTMB Index.
- New Balance is a Continental Team according to the UTMB Index but a Challenger Team according to the ITRA Performance Index.
- Joma is a Continental Team according to the ITRA Performance Index but a Challenger Team according to the UTMB Index.
- Craft is a Continental Team according to the UTMB Index but a Challenger Team according to the ITRA Performance Index.
In other words, five brands move from one division to another depending on the benchmark used. That is significant.
Recent changes to the UTMB Index appear to be having an immediate impact on the global hierarchy.
4. Kailas confirms its rise to prominence
The team is:
- 2nd in the Continental Trail Team category according to UTMB.
- 6th in the World Trail Team category according to ITRA.
Kailas-Fuga probably boasts the largest international roster in trail running, with more than 50 elite athletes, alongside Asics and, to a lesser extent, Brooks and Hoka.
5. Kiprun establishes itself as a credible global powerhouse
The French brand is now firmly established in the top 3 of the world’s second division.
- 3rd Continental Team according to UTMB.
- 3rd Continental Team according to ITRA.
Kiprun achieves virtually the same ranking regardless of the performance benchmark used.
7. French teams strongly represented internationally
Four French teams are featured in the global top 24:
- Kiprun (9th in both ITRA and UTMB)
- Cimalp (20th ITRA, 21st UTMB)
- Rossignol (22nd in both ITRA and UTMB)
- Wise (24th in both ITRA and UTMB)
8. The biggest performance improvements
In terms of points, the largest increases are:
UTMB:
- Norda: +32
- ACG Nike: +29
- Craft: +28
- Merrell: +22
- Cimalp: +21
ITRA:
- Norda: +19
- Brooks: +18
- Dynafit: +16
- Cimalp: +15
9. Three female athletes in the world’s top 5
The performance scores of female athletes have been mathematically adjusted and re-evaluated in comparison with those of male athletes.
As a result, individually and based on the ITRA Performance Index, short trail world champion Tove Alexandersson (Salomon’s new signing) holds the highest performance score in the world with 960 out of 1000, ahead of Jim Walmsley (Hoka) with 958, Courtney Dauwalter (Salomon) with 956, and Katie Schide (On) and Rémi Bonnet (Salomon), both with 954.
In other words, three women are among the five highest-performing trail athletes in the world.
They are followed by Philemon Kiriago (On), Patrick Kipngeno (On), Elhousine Elazzaoui (NNormal), Francesco Puppi (Hoka), and Miao Yao (ACG-Nike).
Fred Bousseau’s Analysis
Frédéric Bousseau has been observing the evolution of the trail running world for 25 years. He initiated this team ranking, now produced in collaboration with Enduraw Data and Distances+.
“The main development observed between the first edition of our trail team rankings, published in December 2025, and this second version, now updated every four months, concerns the gaps that have emerged between the rankings based on the ITRA Performance Index and those based on the UTMB Index.
This difference barely existed six months ago. The same teams appeared in each category regardless of the benchmark used. Only a few positional changes could be observed.
This time, however, the discrepancies are much more pronounced, which could be explained by the recent update of the UTMB Index and its calculation methodology. The first effects already seem to be visible in the global hierarchy of teams.
There is an urgent need to harmonize performance indices in order to establish a single benchmark for interpreting performance.
Kailas joins the global elite
In the World Team category, which brings together the strongest squads in global trail running, the hierarchy remains broadly stable. Hoka retains first place ahead of Salomon, while Asics, ACG (Nike) and Adidas Terrex continue to rank among the sport’s leading teams.
The main difference between the two methodologies concerns the emergence of Kailas at the top level when rankings are based on the ITRA Performance Index. The Chinese brand moves up one division, while ON is relegated to the tier below.
This progression can largely be explained by the scale of Kailas’s international roster. With 60 registered athletes, the brand now possesses—alongside Asics and its 52 athletes—one of the largest squads in global trail running. The strong presence of Asian runners, some of whom hold particularly high ratings, contributes to strengthening the team’s overall score. Above all, several major athletes now compete under the Kailas Fuga banner, including Christian Minoggio (935), Sunmaya Budha (931), William Boffelli (928), Miguel Arsénio (925), as well as Camilla Magliano (913) and Maria Fuentes (901).
Movement in the world’s second division
The differences are even more visible in the Continental Team category, which represents the second tier of our hierarchy.
According to the UTMB Index, Craft and The North Face move up into this higher division. This promotion comes notably at the expense of La Sportiva, which drops down one tier and joins the Challenger Team category.
On the ITRA side, New Balance is relegated to the Challenger Team category by just 3 points. One factor that may explain this shift is the departure of Damien Humbert to Kailas and Théo Detienne’s move to Brooks. While Detienne was one of New Balance’s highest-rated athletes, the young runner—who exploded in popularity on social media in 2025—is not among Brooks’ top four male athletes. Those spots belong to American Chris Myers and Italians Daniel Pattis, Roberto Delorenzi and Gianluca Ghiano.
Conversely, some major transfers observed over the past few months have had only a limited impact on the rankings of the top teams.
Here are a few examples:
- Tove Alexandersson joining Salomon
- Miao Yao leaving Salomon for ACG-Nike
- Jennifer Lichter leaving The North Face for ACG-Nike
- Ida Amelie Robsahm leaving Hoka for Asics
- Rachel Entrekin joining Norda
- Mathieu Blanchard leaving Salomon for Kiprun
- Andrew Blanes leaving Hoka for Salomon
- Hans Troyer leaving Altra for Hoka
Understanding this 2nd International Trail Team Ranking
This global ranking — mixed and gender-balanced — was established by calculating the average performance scores of the four best male athletes and the four best female athletes on each team — in May 2026 — after harmonizing, and therefore re-evaluating, women’s “scores” in relation to men’s scores, according to a mathematical formula conceptualized by Enduraw.
The International Trail Running Team Ranking is organized into three hierarchical pyramid divisions: World Trail Team (6 teams), Continental Trail Team (8 teams) and Challenger Trail Team (10 teams).
Three teams enter this ranking: the young brand and new team Mount to Coast, as well as Rossignol and Wise.
Five teams do not appear in the final ranking because their average score is below the 3rd division (Challenger Team). These are Arc’teryx, Compressport, NNormal, Scarpa and Vibram — most of which are currently penalized by the absence of a fourth female athlete.
Two performance indicators, two different rankings
Two separate rankings were established, one based on ITRA performance scores (International Trail Running Association), the other based on the UTMB Index. Indeed, neither of these performance-level calculation systems has achieved full consensus in recent years, but both are regularly used and cited. Hence the choice to consider them both.
Moreover, this second edition of the international team ranking is marked by notable differences depending on the performance indicator used (whereas in the first version published at the end of 2025, the six teams at the top of the pyramid were identical in both rankings), which complicates analysis and overall understanding. It is therefore highly likely that the next edition of the ranking, next September, will take only one of these two indicators into account in order to provide greater clarity.
This spring, in the podcast La Bande à D+, during an episode dedicated to the update of UTMB’s own trail performance indicator, the UTMB Index, Fabrice Perrin — UTMB Group’s Sports, Community and Sustainability Director — stated that he hoped that, in the future, there would be only one performance index, implying that the two main references used in the trail running world (ITRA and UTMB) would eventually become one, with the aim of improving the readability of performance in our sport.
It should be noted that all the data taken into account in this international ranking is public. Its production — the result of a voluntary investment between the initiator of this ranking, Fred Bousseau, the data scientists at Enduraw and the media outlet Distances+ — is motivated by the desire to provide neutral information to those following the evolution of high-level trail running, and more specifically its professionalization. This ranking is one analytical tool among others.
The calculations were finalized in May 2026, after the Transvulcania to be precise. They will be updated every four months.
The collective performance barometer according to the ITRA Performance Index

The collective performance barometer according to the UTMB Index

*The trail team ranking was created with the invaluable collaboration of Fred Bousseau.
Below is the list of international trail running teams (ITRA then UTMB), presented in alphabetical order, along with their rosters. Only the four best male athletes and the four best female athletes from each team (from rosters that can sometimes be large, as in the case of Asics and Kailas) were taken into account to establish the 2nd edition of this global ranking.
Notable fact: after normalizing performance scores, which makes it easier to compare the level of male and female athletes, among the 30 teams listed below, 13 are led by female athletes (43%) based on the UTMB Index, compared with 12 (40%) based on ITRA performance scores.
The teams led by a woman in both rankings: ACG / Nike (Jennifer Lichter), Adidas Terrex (Ruth Croft or Yngvild Kaspersen), Altra (Tara Dower), Arc’teryx (Jazmine Lowther and soon Fuzhao Xiang), Joma (Ikram Rharsalla), Norda (Ana Tarasova), On Running (Katie Schide), Salomon (Tove Alexandersson or Courtney Dauwalter), Scott (Madalina Florea) and Topo (Anne-Cécile Thévenot).
